Behind Closed Doors: Facing The Man In The Mirror

Behind Closed Doors: Facing The Man In The Mirror

There is a Japanese belief that every person has three faces.

The first face is the one we show the world. It is polished, presentable, and controlled. It is the role we play in public. It is the image we protect. Most people will only ever know this version of us.

The second face is the one we show to close friends, partners, and family. This face holds more truth. It allows some vulnerability. This is where a little of the mask begins to slip. Someone has to earn their way into this space. They have to prove they are safe.

And then there is the third face, the one we never show anyone. The true self we keep hidden. The one that cries in silence. The one that carries the wounds, the fears, the shame, and the dreams that never made it past closed doors. This is the self we meet in the mirror.

Some people will only know the public face.
Some people may see the personal face.
Almost no one will ever meet the real one.

That last face is sacred. It deserves protection, honesty, and respect. Share it only with those who have proven they can hold it. Share it only with those who can love you at your most raw.

Most importantly, do not forget to show it to yourself. If you cannot be honest with the person in the mirror, then the other faces become masks.
